Beomaster 8000 Repair: Rotary Encoder Issues
The Beomaster uses digital rotary encoders for the control of the volume and the tuner FM frequency. These encoders are optoelectronic using an infrared (IR) LED and a matching receiver. If loss of control of either volume or frequency is experienced it is possible that either the LED or the receiver in the respective encoder failed. In the case of the frequency encoder, it is also possible that the vias on the microcomputer board (#9) are faulty, and need re-soldering.
Another issue frequently encountered is the loss of mechanical damping of the volume encoder (the frequency encoder is undamped). If the volume wheel spins freely, the damper in the back of the encoder has failed and needs replacement. These blog entries discuss these topics in more details:
